Princess Cut Engagement Rings
If you like clean, geometric things, chances are you'll like a princess cut.
It's a square diamond with pointy corners and brilliant style facets underneath, so from the top you get this big X of light. Crisp, modern, and it sits really neatly next to a straight wedding band.
We set GIA and IGI certified lab grown and natural princess cuts at our Granville Street showroom, and every corner gets a prong.

The pointed corners are the princess cut's best feature. They're also its weak spot.
A sharp knock on an exposed corner can chip a diamond, even though diamond is the hardest natural material there is. Hardness and toughness aren't the same thing.
The fix is simple: V-shaped prongs or claws that wrap each corner. They barely change the look and they make the ring far more practical.

Choosing Your Princess Cut
Say you've spotted a princess cut online and you're about to hit buy. Hang on a sec, there are a few things worth checking first.
Is it square? Most sit somewhere around 1.00 to 1.05. Much higher and it starts looking a bit rectangular, which some people like and some really don't.
Are the corners clean? You want no little nicks, and all four quarters should look equally bright.
Is there warmth in the tips? Colour tends to gather in the corners. Going up a grade, or going lab grown, sorts that out.
And how deep is it? A princess cut too deep will look smaller from the top than its weight suggests.
Square stones look sharp in most settings. These ones work especially well.

Side stones on a princess give the ring a structured, balanced shape. Trapezoids suit it well.

A curving band takes the edge off all those straight lines. A softer way to wear a square.

Princess Cut Value
A princess cut usually costs less per carat than a round. Cutters keep more of the original crystal when they cut a square, and that saving gets passed along.
Square stones also face up well for their weight, so you get a lot of visible diamond for the money.
Put the difference toward a better colour, a slightly larger stone or a pavé band. Any of those makes a real difference once the ring is on your hand. And if you're weighing up certificates, our GIA vs IGI guide is a quick read.
Here's how a princess cut ring comes together.
It's modern, bright and good value. Here's why people pick it.

Sits neatly beside straight wedding bands with no awkward gaps.
Usually less per carat than a round, so the budget goes further.
