Cushion Cut Engagement Rings
A cushion cut is square or slightly rectangular with rounded corners and gently curved sides. Picture a pillow from above and you've got the idea.
It's been cut for a long time, and it still has a bit of that old-world feel, but modern cushions are much brighter than their ancestors. You get bold flashes of light rather than the fine glitter of a round.

Here's something that surprises people. Two cushions with the same grades can sparkle completely differently.
Some flash in big chunky bursts. Some look like crushed ice. No wrong answer here.
The certificate won't tell you which is which though, so come look at a few side by side. Takes a minute.
Choosing Your Cushion
Say you love cushions but can't decide between square and a bit longer. Totally normal, and it comes down to the ratio.
Right around 1.00 it's square, balanced and a little old school. Put a halo on that and it's very glam.
Past about 1.15, it's what we'd call an elongated cushion. Longer, more modern, and we've got a separate page for them if that's where you're leaning.
Heads up on colour, too. Cushions can hold a bit of warmth, so if you want bright white, go a grade higher or look at lab grown.
Soft corners work with almost any setting. These are our favourites.
Four prongs at the corners keep the outline clean and let the cushion's big flashes shine.
Possibly the most loved cushion look. The frame makes the centre look larger and adds a lot of glow.
Value and Size
Cushion cuts usually cost less per carat than a round of similar quality. Less of the rough crystal is lost during cutting, and that saving shows up in the price.
The trade-off is that a cushion can sit a little deeper, so it may look slightly smaller from above than a round of the same weight. A halo fixes that quickly.
