Round Brilliant Diamond Rings
The round brilliant is the most popular engagement ring shape, and it isn't really close. It has 57 or 58 facets arranged to send as much light as possible back up through the top of the stone.
The result is that busy, lively sparkle most people picture when they think of a diamond. It also suits nearly every setting, every finger and every metal, which makes it an easy choice if you're buying as a surprise.
We set GIA and IGI certified round lab grown and natural diamonds at our Granville Street showroom, in everything from simple solitaires to full pavé halos.

With a round, cut does most of the heavy lifting.
GIA only gives an overall cut grade to round brilliants, and that grade tells you how well the stone handles light. A well cut round with slightly lower colour often looks better than a poorly cut one with a perfect colour grade.
So if you're deciding where to spend, spend on cut first.

Choosing Your Round Diamond
Picked your diamond? Next question is prongs, and people have strong opinions here.
Four prongs show more diamond and make it look a tiny bit square from above. Clean, simple, modern.
Six keeps the outline perfectly round and spreads the load, so if one prong gets bent the stone's still held. Some folks swear six makes the diamond look smaller. Plenty of others can't tell the difference.
Height's worth a thought too. Up high, more light gets in and it really shows off. Down low, it won't catch on your sweater and a wedding band slides right up against it.
If you want to nerd out a bit, our solitaire rings page goes into prongs and settings in more detail.
Honestly, a round looks good in almost anything. Here's where most people end up.

A ring of little diamonds around the centre. A one carat suddenly looks like more, and nobody needs to know.

Price and Value
Round brilliants usually cost more per carat than most other shapes. Part of that is demand. The other part is waste: cutters lose more of the rough crystal shaping a round than they do with a cushion or a princess.
There are easy ways to stretch your budget though. A diamond just under a whole carat, say 0.90 instead of 1.00, can look almost identical once set and cost noticeably less.
Lab grown rounds are another option. They're real diamonds, graded the same way, and they let you put more of the budget into size or a better cut.

The original pairing: a round brilliant on four or six prongs. Hard to get wrong.
A ring of small diamonds around a round centre adds width and a lot of extra light.
