A marquise is long, with curved sides and a point at each end. Some people see a little boat, some see a football, some see an eye.

Its party trick is looking huge. So much of the stone is spread across the top that a marquise looks bigger face-up than most shapes at the same weight. Fingers look longer and slimmer too.

Marquise diamonds vary a lot in length. A ratio around 1.75 to 2.15 is the classic range. Shorter stones look plump; longer ones look slender and dramatic.

Like ovals and pears, a marquise often shows a darker bow tie across the middle. A soft one adds contrast. A heavy one looks like a shadow. It isn't graded, so it has to be judged by eye.

Symmetry matters too. Fold the stone in half in your mind, both lengthwise and across, and the halves should match.

You can also set a marquise east to west, sideways across the finger. It's an unusual look and it sits lower, which some people find more comfortable.

If you want the biggest looking stone for a given carat weight, a marquise is hard to beat. Its long, shallow outline spreads across the finger.
