A heart is a brilliant cut with two rounded lobes on top, a little dip between them and a point at the bottom. Cut well, it's bright and honestly more elegant than people expect.

Cut badly, everyone notices. The lobes need to match, the dip needs to be crisp, the point has to line up with the middle. It's a fussy shape.

We set GIA and IGI certified lab grown and natural hearts at our Granville Street showroom, and we look hard at the symmetry before we suggest one.

Say you buy a heart online, and when it arrives one lobe is noticeably chubbier than the other. Once you see it, you can't stop seeing it. That's the risk with this shape.

So we look at the two lobes before anything else. They should be twins.

Plump or slim is up to you. No wrong answer there.

Three prongs is classic, one at the point and one on each lobe. Five if you're hard on your hands.

Because a heart reads better at larger sizes, budget can be the deciding factor.
