With a round diamond, a tiny inclusion gets lost in all the sparkle. Emerald cuts don't have that cover. There's a big open window on top, and if there's a dark speck in the middle, you'll see it every time you look down.

Choosing Your Emerald Cut
Here's something that surprises people. Two emerald cuts with the same carat weight can look completely different on a finger, and it's mostly the length to width ratio.
Around 1.35 is the classic. Past 1.50 it's long and lean, great if you want your fingers to look longer. Under 1.30 it's heading toward a square.
Pick what you like, honestly. Nobody's checking.
Quick colour tip: the open top shows warmth more than a round does, so it's often worth going a grade or two whiter.
Easiest way to decide is in person. Come try a few ratios on and see which one you keep reaching for.
The same stone can feel minimal, glamorous or a little unexpected depending on what holds it.
Four prongs and a plain band. The quiet option, and honestly the one that shows the step facets best.
Small diamonds along the shank add sparkle without competing with the long flashes of the centre stone.
A border of tiny diamonds traces the rectangle and makes the whole ring read bigger from across a room.
The diamonds sit under the stone, so you only catch them from the side. A nice surprise for whoever's wearing it.
Trapezoids or smaller stones on each side stretch the ring wider and give it a more formal outline.
A bypass shank softens all those straight lines. Good if you want something a bit less serious.
Lab Grown or Natural
Because clarity matters so much with this cut, budget can disappear fast on a natural stone with a clean centre.
That's one reason lab grown emerald cuts make so much sense. They're real diamonds with the same hardness and the same grading, and you can usually get a cleaner, larger stone for the money.
