Diamond Rings with Accents
An accent diamond is any smaller stone that sits alongside the main one. The tiniest ones are called melee in the trade. They might run down the band, sit in a hidden ring under the head, or flank the centre stone on each side.
On their own they're easy to miss. Together they change the whole personality of a ring. A row of pavé makes a slim band look brighter. Two tapered baguettes make a round look more formal. A few marquise stones scattered along the shank can look almost botanical.
We set accent diamonds by hand at our Granville Street showroom, around GIA and IGI certified lab grown and natural diamonds.

This trips up a lot of people shopping for accent diamond rings.
A ring listed at 2.00 ctw (total carat weight) adds up every diamond on it. That could be a 1.50 carat centre plus half a carat of small stones on the band. It isn't a two carat diamond.
There's nothing wrong with that. Accents are a smart way to get more sparkle for the money. You just want to compare like with like.
Whenever you look at a ring with us, we'll break it down:

Choosing Your Accent Style
Most of this decision comes down to one thing: how the little diamonds are held in place.
Pavé is the sparkliest. Tiny beads of metal grip rows of small stones packed close together. The catch? It needs a check-up every so often, and GIA notes it can be harder to resize.
Channel settings sink the stones into a groove between two metal walls. You lose a bit of sparkle. You also stop snagging sweaters, which people who work with their hands tend to appreciate.
Bezel accents give each diamond its own little rim of metal. Modern, a bit playful, very secure.
Side stones are the bigger accents, one or two on each side of the centre. Think baguettes, pears, marquise, trapezoids.
Can't decide? Put a pavé ring and a channel ring on the same hand and walk over to the window. You'll see it straight away.
Small stones, big effect. These are the details we check before recommending an accent design.

Accents that look whiter or yellower than the centre stand out for the wrong reasons. GIA suggests keeping side stones within about two colour grades.

Halfway, three quarters or all the way round. More coverage means more sparkle, but it makes resizing trickier later.

Pears, marquise and baguettes give a ring a distinct outline. They work best when their size suits the centre stone.

Each small diamond sits in its own little cup of metal. Secure, smooth to the touch and easy to wear every day.

A full circle of diamonds around the centre makes the main stone look bigger from across the room.

Already have a solitaire? A diamond enhancer slides around it and adds accents without resetting your stone.

Looking After Small Diamonds
Accent diamonds are secure, but they're small, and small things deserve a bit of attention.
Take the ring off for the gym, gardening and anything involving heavy lifting. A hard knock on the edge of a pavé band is the most common way a tiny stone goes missing.
Lotion and soap build up under the accents and dull them faster than the centre. Warm water, a drop of mild dish soap and a soft toothbrush clears most of it.
Then bring it in once a year. We'll look at every setting under magnification and tighten anything that's shifted, so a loose stone gets caught early.
Here's how we design an accent ring around your centre stone.

Choose your main diamond first. The accents are then sized and matched to it, not the other way round.

Pavé, side stones, hidden halo or a mix. We'll sketch options and explain the upkeep for each.

Check the 3D model, sign off, and we hand-set every accent in 14K, 18K or platinum.
Accent diamonds let you change how a ring looks without throwing the whole budget at the centre stone.
Small diamonds cost a lot less per carat than big ones. Spread across a band, they add plenty of light for the money.
Side stones and halos make the whole ring wider, so the centre reads larger than it is.
Mix shapes, add a hidden halo, sneak a birthstone in among the accents. Up to you.
